PM Update: Severe Weather Warning for DC area until 8 p.m

* Severe thunderstorm warning until 8pm *

Today it felt a little summery across the area, especially with the increasing humidity concentrated at high levels. Due to the humidity, temperatures felt more like the low 90s during peak afternoon heat, reaching into the 80s and around 90s in some places.

With all the warmth and humidity, showers and storms have spread to our west. A few storms could sweep across parts of the area later this evening, and there is a chance that some storms could produce damaging winds and hail in addition to lightning and heavy rain.

See you tonight: Scattered thunderstorms are possible throughout the evening, with the most numerous in the western and northern portions of the area. Activity could last until about midnight. The best chances for storms near the Beltway will likely be just before sunset, if they don't break up before they arrive. Any storms could be strong to locally severe.

Remember that a severe weather warning means that conditions for severe storms are present – it is not a guarantee that your location will be hit. However, if a warning is issued for your location, it means a storm is imminent and you should seek shelter.

Overnight, lows should fall to a range of around 18 to 21 degrees Celsius. The wind will continue to blow from the south at around 8 km/h. Fog may form in places.

Tomorrow (Thursday): After patchy fog moves in, skies will likely be cloudier than usual, perhaps limiting the storm potential somewhat late in the day. There is currently a risk of severe storms at a level 1 out of 5, according to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center. However, showers and storms may be more frequent today than tomorrow – regardless of whether they are severe. Highs should be in the low to mid-80s.
