Illinois athletes to watch at 2024 U.S. Olympic Swimming Qualifiers – NBC Chicago

The Olympic Games are just around the corner and the final qualifying rounds for the US swimming, track and field and gymnastics teams will take place at the end of June.

The first event will be the swimming competitions, which begin on Saturday and continue until June 23. The competitions will be held at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. This is a historic moment as the competitions will be held in a football stadium for the first time.

There will be plenty of athletes from Illinois and the Midwest vying for a spot on the team, including some Olympic veterans looking to return to the Games to win another medal.

Below is the list of participants from the state of Illinois who could make it to the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris:

Robert F. Kennedy

Born in Palos Heights, Murphy is an Olympian specializing in backstroke and has won four Olympic gold medals. He has competed in the 2016 and 2020 Olympics and is on track to qualify for Paris.

Olivia Smoglia

Smoglia, an Olympian from Glenview, specializes in backstroke and freestyle. The 29-year-old is aiming for her third Olympic Games this year after winning a gold and a bronze medal in her previous appearances.

Leah Hayes

Eighteen-year-old world championship bronze medalist Leah Hayes is attempting to compete in the Olympics for the first time this year. Hayes is originally from Sugar Grove, swims with the Fox Valley Park District Riptides, is ranked number one in the state, and has already committed to the University of Virginia.

Annika Parkhe

Parkhe, from Deerfield, has chosen Stanford University and is ranked No. 2 in the state in her class. The 18-year-old will swim for a spot on her first Olympic team.

Garret Clasen

Clasen, originally from Aurora, is a swimmer at the University of Chicago and is a three-time NCAA Division III finalist.

Jeffrey Hou

Willowbrook native Jeffrey Hou, who also attended UPenn, is ranked No. 2 in the state of Illinois in the class of 2024.

Kevin Hausmann

Houseman is a doctoral student at Northwestern University and an NCAA champion in the 100- and 200-meter breaststroke.

Conor Morikawa

Morikawa, another Northwestern University swimmer, also qualified for his first Olympic qualifiers this year, most recently taking first place in the 100-meter breaststroke final of the Indy May Cup.

Alex Lakin

Lakin is from Naperville and is the fourth-grader in the class of 2023. He attended Naperville Central High School and has now decided to attend Oakland University.

Luke Maurer

Maurer, originally from Wilmette and now a senior swimmer at Stanford University, is a 12-time All-American and is now competing in the qualifying competition.

Quinn Cynor

Cynor currently swims at the University of Wyoming but is originally from Woodstock, Illinois. He is a junior who specializes in freestyle, butterfly and backstroke.

Charlie Tracy

Tracy, from Chicago, has now committed to Notre Dame and is ranked ninth in the state. He previously attended Saint Ignatius College Prep and swims for the Chicago Wolfpack Aquatic Club.

Tyler Bardak

Bardak is the second-best swimmer in the state of Illinois in the class of 2025 and is originally from Naperville. He is now a member of the Fox Valley Swim Club.

Elisabeth Nawrocki

Nawrocki is from Aurora and is committed to the University of Georgia. She specializes in breaststroke.

Bridget McGann

McGann, of Earlville, Illinois, has committed to the University of Wisconsin. She will compete in the preliminaries in the 100-meter breaststroke.

Grace Koenig song

Koenig Song, originally from Chicago, currently swims with the NASA Wildcats and is on track to earn her first Olympic team spot. She is considered one of the fastest 13-year-old swimmers in the country.

Grant Bocheneski

A swimmer at the University of Missouri, Bocheneski is originally from Naperville and broke several records in college, including the fastest time in the 100-meter backstroke.

Brady Johnson

Johnson is a West Chicago native and the top player in the class of 2024 in Illinois. He won the 50-meter backstroke at the NCSA Spring Championships this year and has committed to the University of Arizona.

Justine Murdock

Murdock is a junior at Northwestern University and hails from Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. The 21-year-old is currently on her way to her second Olympic qualifying competition.

Tierney Lenahan

Lenahan, who is from Wilmette, is currently attending Duke University and is the top student in the state of Illinois for the class of 2025.

Vera Conic

Conic is the No. 1 prospect in the state of Illinois for the class of 2026. At 16 years old, she is a standout player at her club in Palatine.

Diego Nosack

Nosack, a swimmer in his freshman year at Northwestern University, will be competing in the Trials for the first time this year. He is originally from Oregon, where he is ranked number one in the state for the class of 2027.

Brayden Capen

Capen, only 14 years old, is from Naperville. He qualified for the preliminary rounds in the 200-meter backstroke.

Stuart Seymour

Seymour is a Northwestern University swimmer who qualified for the Olympic trials for the first time this year. He qualified for the 50-meter freestyle at the Illinois NASA Spring Blast Off in May.

Charlie Buford

A graduate of New Trier University and originally from Wilmette, Bufton attended Northwestern University before transferring to North Carolina State University.

Alec Filipovic

St. Charles native Alex Filipovic is competing in more Olympic qualifying events after already competing in those in 2021. Filipovic currently swims at the University of Texas at Austin.

Anna Peplowski

Peplowksi is currently a junior at Indiana University. Peplowski is originally from Germantown Hills, Illinois, and qualified for her second probationary season this year.

Josh Bey

Bey, of Hinsdale, a member of the junior national team, has secured his spot at the Trials for the first time. He is currently ranked No. 1 in the state for the class of 2025.

Connor Boyle

University of Virginia swimmer Connor Boyle comes from the Fox Valley Swim Team in Naperville. He competed in the 2021 trials and is now back for a second attempt to make the Olympic team.
